With spring we also welcome Mouthfull's first monthly newsletter, wonderful to have you here.
As many of you would have seen, we celebrated 3 years of broadcasting last month, with a live event at Aro Hall in Te Whanganui-a-Tara & a live-to-air broadcast from Tฤmaki Makaurau & Berlin! A massive thank you to all who have been involved and who celebrated with usโwe love you all and couldnโt exist without you. We hope this newsletter will be a place for the wider Mouthfull whฤnau to share space together, an extension of the chatroomโฆ
We are very sad to farewell the long-standing and special show All Grass Green hosted by DJ Kristen Stewart & Ava, this show and both of you will be deeply missed xx
Keep your eyes out for a couple of new shows starting up later in the month, including Long Distance w/ Meggs & Outpatient ๐ป๐ก๐
We also had a wonderful guest mix from Silva Spiral.
Silva Spiral produces, writes, and records a collection of soundscapes oscillating from experimental pop to dark, drone - y etherea from her windowless bedroom in the bloody, beating heart of Wellington.
And a 2-hour special from 2 of the Mouthfull day ones, Tyler and DJ B.Lo.
Stoked to have Gussie providing the jukebox this month; filled with psychedelic gems, homegrown grooves, and a few classics too. ๐ญโจ
Where Is the Friend's House? (1987) directed by Abbas Kiarostami
Kiarostami handles silence and stillness like no other director, he canโt escape from his humanistic, meditative, and empathetic approach to storytelling, and Iโm overjoyed by it! This is a simple parable of a child's virtue and how his efforts to do the right thing by returning his friend's homework are impeded by adult apathy, misunderstanding, and scorn. The film is a wonderful examination of youth camaraderie, freedom, and perseverance, despite parental and authoritarian expectations. At the core of this film is morality vs. obedience, conscience vs. command, and Kiarostami makes a strong argument against following orders and expectations.ย 5 Stars!

Come On Over (International Version) - Shania Twain
I've never pretended to take music seriously, or understand the intricacies or backstory when discussing a certain album. But that practice ends for me, when it comes to Come On Over (COO) from Shania Twain. COO was released right after I was born, so Shania did infact write it for me. The songs cover a range of topics from domestic abuse to feminism. If I ever get married I will dance with my wife to "You're Still The One" and queerphobia in the South Island will cease to exist.
This is the best album ever. Have my babies Shania xx

Rogue Aotearoa
Born from a spark of inspiration, DIY fashion showcase, Rogue, was held in Tฤmaki Makaurau the Friday before NZFW. The objective? Push the boundaries of fashion in Aotearoa, create exposure for emerging designers and emphasize inclusivity.
Tickets were snatched up in mere hours - a testament to the eminence of Rogue. As the house lights dimmed on show night, the atmosphere was electric and charged with excitement - the extravaganza was about to begin.
Guests left buzzing, and hungry for more, after experiencing not just a celebration of fashion but of art, music, community, diversity, and of course unbridled creativity.

Destiny by DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ
A four hour journey that's almost more like a mix instead of an album, for those unacquainted with Sabrina, they play a genre somewhere in between house and nostalgia-core (if that's even a genre), basically house with a ton of Y2k pop samples but chopped and reverbed that you'll still have these flashbacks into your past life like a 'That's so Raven' moment.
Normally their albums teether a bit on the wall of sound vibe that does get tedious on the second or third listen-through but this baby has many highlights to keep it refreshing throughout the four hours.

akl dance music scene
Hi (tw sa)
bigups to those in tฤmaki makaurau who are upholding the community within the dance music scene like nympho and filth. dancefloors should be safe for all. unfortunately - some crews work with/support abusers whilst excluding people who have experienced sa. these labels and collectives perpetuate the stigma and shame around SA (+ book stale lineups in the process). this review won't name and shame, but requests we do better:
1. hold yourself and your mates accountable.
2. if you can't throw a safe gig don't host one
3. kick out abusive dicks & work on your kaupapa.

Muรฑekita by Kali Uchis, El Alfa, JT
I like this song. I like this song a lot. If I had the ability to write something profound or technical to describe the way this song makes me feel (like something about its actual sonic qualities or maybe a deep dive into the lyrics) I would, but unfortunately I am not anywhere near equipped to be responsible of that task. I will say though, I have RELIED on this song for my bus ride every morning these last 2 weeks and it has genuinely convinced me that I might be the sexiest person in Wellington. Thatโs the effect that it has.

Light And Colour (Goethe's Theory) - The Morning after the Deluge - Moses Writing the Book of Genesis. By J.M.W Turner
Light meets the eye - curdling sensory phenomena into complex symposiums of arcing emotion and beauty. Goetheโs subjective, Romantic theory of light pitted against Newtonโs objective, scientific theory. Their ideas rebound within the liminal space Turner depicts - reality fusing itself to oneโs perspective. This is the distillment of a painting that hit my chest, spun my heart, and wrapped me in an embrace so tight I forgot where I was (the Tokyo national art centre). On my last day in Japan, I felt the touch of an angel. The morning after the deluge was the evening I flew home.

The Meg 2
It had been a long day. All I wanted to do was go to the movies and watch a film. Any film. Lucky for me, it was Cinebuzz Cheap Tuesdays at Event Cinemas. Unfortunately, thatโs still $15.00 too expensive for The Meg 2 โ the worst film I have ever seen.

Uranga with Awa + Friends
Awa started to DJ in my mumโs pottery studio. Awa would often be playing tunes while mum worked on her pottery. Awa then burnt mum a CD of her favourite songs she had heard him play, which to this day is often blasted through the house.
Uranga has always been about friendship. Music has this quality and many of us experience this though sharing songs, albums and playlists with each other. Awaโs embodiment of friendship and kindness is expressed in the most wholesome of ways. The music reflecting this wholehearted person so well.
I give Uranga 5 stars.
